This institution provides a therapeutic alternative for the arrest of Retinitis Pigmentosa that is based on the accumulated experience and research conducted, for several years, by a group of specialists led by the eminent Cuban scientist, nationally and internationally recognized, Professor Doctor Orfilio Peláez Molina (1923-2001).
The work verticalized by them towards the study of Retinitis Pigmentosa, would be the genesis of the Cuban Society of Retinitis Pigmentosa. It is precisely at the beginning of the 90s when the National Group was created and then the Retinitis Pigmentosa Society; such background, added to the support of the National Health System allowed to form a National Program of Retinitis Pigmentosa, which from a holistic approach covers the phases of research, diagnosis, study of the family, as well as a coherent platform for clinical, basic and epidemiological research .
In more than 20 years, the institution reports having attended, among outpatients and inpatients, more than 99 802 patients, from about 109 countries, of which the largest percentage corresponds to patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa.
In its seven floors, the architectural installation has 60 rooms comfortably equipped for the satisfaction of patients and family.
It also has areas for consultation and clinical research, three operating rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology, two dedicated to ophthalmic surgery in general and another to refractive surgery with excimer and femtosecond lasers.
