Old age is a normal stage of life, we grow old since we are born. The study of aging, its causes and characteristics has become the object of attention of many governments due to the increase in the proportion of the elderly in the population.
Studying and evaluating the quality of health care and the quality of life offered to older adults in all its dimensions is a priority of the Cuban State.
Old age is an appreciable gift that is currently enjoyed by some 600 million people over 60 in the world. The phenomenon not only reflects the highest rates of elderly populations in the history of mankind, but the trend in the current century is towards the increase of the elderly, even in underdeveloped countries.
The increase in longevity determines that most of the developed countries, and some such as Cuba, in the process of development, have a life expectancy of over 60 years, while increasing the tendency to decrease birth rates.
The important social, technical and scientific advances will allow a population of more than 1 billion people in their 60s in the near future, and also that, for the first time in the history of many countries, the elderly are more numerous than Young.
According to the demographic projections of the UN, as of 2003, a quarter of the population of the planet is already over 60 years old, and 1 in 3 adults will be an old person.
The quality of care for the elderly was defined as the "degree to which health services for individuals and population improve the possibility of achieving the desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge." Implicit in the various definitions are the objectives of the quality of care in Cuba as:
• Good professional performance
• The efficient use of resources
• Guarantee the minimum damage
• Achieve patient and family satisfaction.
For the foregoing, prudent medicine is necessary, where respect for the integrity of the elderly prevails. Ethical and clinical reflection can contribute in practice.
