The beginning of medical studies in Havana dates back to the creation of the first university in Cuba, founded at the beginning of the 18th century by the Order of the Preaching Brothers of Santo Domingo , in his convent of San Juan de Letrán.
January 12, 1726 is taken as the beginning of the Royal and Pontifical University of San Jerónimo of Havana, located at the bottom of the Greater Parish and a few meters from the Plaza de Armas, in the heart of the from the Villa de San Cristóbal in Havana.
Among the five faculties of the newly created university was that of Medicine next to those of Theology, Sacred Canons, Law and the Minor Faculty or Baccalaureate in Arts. He told with a small number of students and was considered of little importance.
