The Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery is a highly specialized institution dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of Heart Disease. Founded in 1966 by the Ministry of Public Health, directed from its foundation until 2004 by the Dr. in Sciences Alberto Hernández Cañero Professor and since 2004 to date by Professor Dr. Lorenzo D. Llerena Rojas, is a center with a high scientific-technical rigor with a vast experience in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
This institution provides services in all areas of cardiology and has a department of Cardiovascular Surgery with more than 10,000 operations among which are: Myocardial Revascularization, Valvular Replacements with biological and mechanical prostheses, reconstruction or plasty of the mitral and tricuspid valve, surgery of the ascending aorta, a department of hemodynamics and interventional cardiology that performs more than 2,000 coronary angiograms per year, more than 1,000 procedures of coronary intervention, where mitral and pulmonary valvuloplasty are performed, right catheterization, peripheral angioplasties and of renal arteries; an Arrhythmia and Pacemaker department where more than 1,000 pacemakers are implanted per year. In addition, implantations of Automatic Defibrillator (ICD), Ventricular Resynchronization Therapy (multisite stimulation), Electrophysiological Studies and Radiofrequency Ablation of Arrhythmias and Accessory Routes are performed. It has a department of Nuclear Medicine where studies are carried out for the diagnosis and stratification of patients with ischemic heart disease, for the evaluation of myocardial viability, ventricular function and assessment of ventricular asynchrony with a view to performing cardiac resynchronization therapy, a Department of Rehabilitation with an experience of over 25 years in the prevention of heart disease and in the rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular disease.
